PNH400 THEMED PILLARS OF CELEBRATION
Let’s break it down.
Portsmouth is so many things. Through community focus groups and workshops, PNH400 has arranged its organization and programs around seven specific themes, which we call our “Pillars.”
ARTS & CULTURE
Engage the Seacoast’s abundant arts & culture community to tell stories and celebrate Portsmouth’s 400+ years through performance and creative artistic programs, projects, and events. Seek historical accuracy.
COMMERCE & TRADE
The N.H. Seacoast was founded as a center of commerce, not for religious purposes. Tell the story of how Portsmouth has welcomed businesses and flourished through commerce and trade from downtown to Pease, from small independents to large corporations. Engage area businesses in the celebrations.
COMMUNITY & NEIGHBORHOODS
One of Portsmouth’s greatest strengths is the deep sense of community and collaboration felt by residents and those who locate their businesses here. We invite neighbors to celebrate and preserve their neighborhoods, traditions, and ethnic heritage.
EDUCATION
Engage our diverse community in telling stories that educate residents and visitors about the contributions made by those who came before us to present day contributors, setting the stage for those who follow. Empower our students of all ages to preserve oral histories. Incorporate technology.
MARITIME & MILITARY
Recognize Portsmouth’s historic connections to our waterways through commercial and leisure activities. Honor the three branches of the military and those who have served to protect our country. Celebrate Portsmouth’s love affair with and commitment to preservation of our rivers, bays, and the ocean.
SIGNATURE EVENTS
Bring to life major community events throughout 2023 that memorialize the celebration of 400 years of progress. Parade! Little Italy Carnival! StreetLife!400! Picnic!
LEGACY PROJECTS
What will we leave for future generations to tell the story of how the Portsmouth community celebrated and commemorated the 400th anniversary of the settlement of NH Seacoast?
